Morris Women (45) v. Brooklyn (15)
09/26/09
The Morris Lady Lions took to the field on a beautiful Saturday morning expecting to face a formidable opponant in the Brooklyn women, and they were not dissapointed.
Though the 45 - 15 score may suggest otherwise, do not be fooled, this was a hard fought battle between two hungry and hard working teams. Forwards on both sides of the ball played a very physical and aggressive game, doing much of the work in terms of moving the ball up and down the field. Ball was played evenly in scrums and rucks were quick and, at times, brutally aggressive. Though both teams played tough, scrappy rugby, the Morris women eventually wore down their rivals with unrelenting defense and an energized and undaunted spirit.
Tries were scored on the Morris side by Sara Carpenter, Siobhan Doherty (2 tries), Colleen Lawrence (3 tries), Kelly Miniter, and Katie Mozer. Ashley Belline added 5 points to the board with a penalty kick for points and a conversion. Unfortunately, the game was called to an early close as the Brooklyn fly half was taken to the hospital with a serious head injury. To date, she is doing well and, when all was said and done in the Emergency Room the two teams came together and enjoyed an afternoon of celebration and revelry. Morris Women of the Match went to #9, Amy (Goobs) Gubitosa and Colleen Lawrence who did an outstanding job at Fullback. The women are now 2 games away from NRU playoffs.
